What to Wear for Newborn Photos: A Guide for the Whole Family

If you are wondering what to wear for newborn photos, there is a good chance you have already opened your closet, stared at everything you own, and decided you somehow have absolutely nothing to wear.

And after having a baby, that feeling makes perfect sense.

Your body has just done something extraordinary. Your favorite jeans may not fit yet. Your maternity clothes suddenly feel too maternity, but your regular clothes do not quite feel right either. You are feeding a baby around the clock, figuring out your new normal, and probably reheating the same cup of coffee for the third time.

Now you are supposed to coordinate outfits for an entire family, too?

No, ma’am.

I remember this feeling because I lived it.

I Wish Someone Had Helped Me for My Own Newborn Photos

When I was planning clothing for my daughter’s newborn photos, I wish I had been given some guidance.

I had none.

The photographer I chose did not help me figure out what would photograph well, what would flatter my postpartum body, or how I should coordinate everything. So I did what moms tend to do when we really care about something.

I obsessed over it.

I looked online for months trying to find the right outfit. I searched and searched because these photographs mattered to me, and I wanted everything to be beautiful.

Eventually, I chose something.

It was okay.

There was nothing particularly wrong with it, but looking back now, I know it did absolutely nothing for my postpartum body. I wish I had worn a beautiful blush pink or soft white dress. Something feminine, flowing, and flattering. Something that would have made me feel beautiful instead of making me wonder whether I had chosen the “right” thing.

I can’t go back and change what I wore.

But that experience absolutely influences how I take care of the moms who walk into my studio now.

The dresses hanging in my client closet aren’t random dresses I purchased because I needed to offer a wardrobe.

They are dresses I love. They are dresses I would have wanted to wear for my own newborn session.

I chose them with postpartum moms in mind. I want beautiful fabrics, flattering silhouettes, soft colors, movement, and pieces that help a woman feel feminine during a season when her body may not quite feel like her own yet.

Because I remember being the mom searching online for months.

I don’t want you to have to do that.

Choosing what to wear for newborn photos should not become another task sitting on your already overflowing list. I want to take that stressful decision from you and make this easier.

When Planning Newborn Family Photo Outfits, Start With Mom

When I help families decide what to wear for newborn pictures, I almost always start with Mom.

There is a practical reason for this. Mom’s clothing usually establishes the overall color palette for the family. Once we know what she is wearing, coordinating everyone else becomes much easier.

But there is another reason I start with Mom.

You just had a baby.

Your body may feel unfamiliar. Something that fit beautifully before pregnancy may sit differently now. Your shape is changing, and it may continue changing from week to week.

I never want a new mom standing in front of my camera tugging at her dress, worried about her stomach, or wishing she could hide behind the baby.

I want you there.

Not six months from now when you think you will feel more like yourself.

Now.

Because this is what motherhood looks like at the beginning.

When choosing a mom outfit for newborn photos, I love flowing dresses, soft fabrics, beautiful necklines, gentle texture, and pieces that give us movement. Sleeves can be wonderful if they make Mom feel more comfortable, and longer skirts create beautiful lines when standing or sitting with baby.

But more than anything, I want to find a dress that allows you to stop thinking about the dress.

Then you can think about the little person in your arms instead.

You May Not Need to Buy a Newborn Photo Outfit at All

This is the part of my newborn photography outfit guide that I hope makes you exhale a little.

You may not need to buy anything for yourself.

My newborn clients have access to my studio client closet, filled with dresses I have selected specifically because I know they photograph beautifully.

Instead of ordering five different sizes, watching packages pile up on the porch, standing in front of your mirror three weeks postpartum, and then remembering you also have to return everything that didn’t work, we can simply take care of it together.

We can choose something based on your body, coloring, preferences, and the overall feeling we are creating for your newborn session.

You don’t need to know what photographs well.

That’s my job.

And because these are dresses I genuinely love, I am not putting you into something simply because it happens to be available.

I want you to look at yourself and think, Oh. I feel pretty.

Especially now.

What Colors Look Best for Newborn Photos?

For studio newborn photography, I tend to recommend softer colors and neutrals because they keep the attention on your family.

Cream, ivory, blush pink, dusty rose, soft blue, muted green, beige, taupe, and subtle florals all photograph beautifully in my studio.

That does not mean your entire family needs to wear beige and disappear into the walls.

Color is welcome.

I especially love soft pinks for moms who want something feminine, and blues and muted greens can be beautiful for both boys and girls.

The trick is choosing colors that work together rather than choosing one exact color for everyone.

Coordinate Your Newborn Family Photo Outfits Instead of Matching

One of the biggest misconceptions about what to wear for newborn photos is that everyone needs to match.

They don’t.

Actually, I would prefer that you don’t.

Think about creating a color palette rather than choosing a uniform.

Mom might wear a blush pink dress. Dad could wear cream or tan. Big brother could wear soft blue. Baby could be wrapped in cream with a little pink.

Everyone looks like they belong together, but nobody looks like they were issued an outfit at the front door.

Another family might choose ivory, beige, and dusty blue.

Or cream, muted green, and a subtle floral.

Different textures and slightly different shades actually give photographs dimension while keeping everything cohesive.

What Should Dad Wear for Newborn Photos?

Thankfully, Dad’s part of this equation is usually pretty simple.

Once we know what Mom is wearing, we coordinate Dad around her.

A simple button-down, knit polo, sweater, or neutral shirt paired with chinos or dress pants usually photographs beautifully.

Cream, tan, light gray, soft blue, and muted greens are easy choices.

I generally recommend avoiding large logos, bold graphics, athletic clothing, and very busy patterns. Dad’s outfit should complement the family rather than become the first thing you notice.

And Dad doesn’t necessarily need to go shopping either.

I have shirt options available in the studio for dads, too.

Because there is absolutely no reason Mom should have to grow the baby, deliver the baby, feed the baby, dress herself, dress the children, pack the diaper bag, remember the pacifier and then discover Dad has chosen a neon fishing shirt five minutes before you leave.

I’ve got you.

And we’ll help Dad, too.

What Should Siblings Wear for Newborn Photos?

When choosing sibling outfits for newborn photos, I want children to coordinate with the family while still looking like children.

For little girls, I love soft dresses, subtle florals, classic silhouettes, and beautiful textures.

For little boys, simple button-downs, knit shirts, sweaters, rompers, and neutral pants work wonderfully.

And please remember comfort.

If your three-year-old is wearing something itchy, stiff, or uncomfortable, we are all going to know about it.

Probably immediately.

Your children need to be able to move, cuddle the baby, climb into Mom’s lap, sit with Dad, and be themselves.

I would rather have a comfortable toddler interacting beautifully with his new baby than an impeccably dressed toddler who has decided photographs are the worst thing that has ever happened to him.

What Should Baby Wear for Newborn Photos?

This is the easiest answer in this entire article.

You don’t need to shop for baby.

I have everything we need.

My studio includes newborn wraps, outfits, blankets, and other pieces selected specifically for newborn photography. We choose baby’s styling based on the colors and overall feeling we have planned for your session.

That might mean a delicate pink outfit for a baby girl, a creamy neutral wrap, soft blue, simple white, or a beautiful textured piece.

Regular newborn clothing can actually be difficult to photograph. Even newborn sizes can swallow a tiny baby, bunch underneath their chin, or hide those little hands and feet we want to see.

Newborn photography outfits are designed differently.

So don’t add “find adorable newborn photo outfit” to your list.

Bring me the baby.

I’ll dress her.

Should Everyone Wear White for Newborn Pictures?

Absolutely. In fact, I love an all white or creamy neutral palette for newborn photos.

There is something so clean and beautiful about a family dressed in soft whites together, especially in my light filled studio. It keeps the photographs simple and allows your baby’s skin, tiny features, and the connection between your family to become the focus.

And while everyone may be wearing white, that doesn’t mean everyone has to wear the exact same white shirt and look perfectly matched.

The secret is texture and subtle variation.

Mom might wear a flowing white or ivory dress while Dad wears a simple cream shirt. Big sister could wear a delicate white dress with lace or embroidery, and baby could be wrapped in a soft ivory knit or dressed in one of the white newborn pieces from my studio wardrobe.

Everyone is wearing essentially the same color family, but the different fabrics and textures give the photograph dimension.

An all white wardrobe also works especially well if you want your newborn photographs to feel very clean, light, and classic. There are no competing colors pulling your attention around the photograph. Your eye goes straight to the people in it.

So if you love the look of your whole family dressed in white for newborn pictures, I am completely on board.

Some of my favorite studio newborn images have been created with exactly that kind of simplicity.

White on white.

Beautiful light.

A brand new baby in the middle of the people who love her.

Sometimes we really don’t need to make it any more complicated than that.

Can You Wear Patterns for Newborn Photos?

Absolutely.

Patterns are not forbidden. They simply need to be intentional.

A delicate floral dress can be gorgeous for newborn photos. So can lace, linen, embroidery, knits, and other subtle textures.

Texture is actually one of my favorite ways to make clothing visually interesting without adding a lot of competing colors.

What I tend to avoid are extremely high contrast patterns, tiny busy prints, large stripes, bold graphics, and anything else that immediately demands attention.

If Mom is wearing a beautiful floral dress, I would probably keep everyone else’s clothing fairly simple.

Someone gets to be interesting.

Everyone else needs to calm down a little.

What Not to Wear for Newborn Photos

I don’t like handing families a giant list of wardrobe rules because there are exceptions to almost everything.

However, there are a few things I generally recommend avoiding.

Large logos and graphics can distract from faces. Neon colors can reflect onto skin. Extremely busy patterns can compete with the people in the photograph. Athletic clothing and running shoes generally don’t fit the softer look of studio newborn portraits.

And I usually recommend avoiding having everyone wear exactly the same thing.

Remember the era when the entire family wore matching white shirts and jeans for family photographs?

We lived through it.

We don’t have to go back.

One Little Detail Moms Often Forget: Your Hands

Your hands are going to be photographed more than you probably realize.

You will cradle baby’s head. Your fingers will wrap around her little body. Dad’s hands may hold her against his chest. Your toddler might reach over and touch her tiny fingers.

You absolutely do not need to schedule an elaborate manicure.

Clean, simple nails are wonderful. Natural nails or a neutral polish photograph beautifully.

The same goes for jewelry and watches. Simple jewelry is lovely, especially if it is sentimental.

If you normally wear a large smartwatch, though, consider removing it for your photographs.

Years from now, I want you looking at how unbelievably tiny your baby’s fingers were wrapped around yours.

Not your step count.

This Newborn Photography Outfit Guide Is Not Supposed to Become a Shopping List

If you finish reading this article and immediately open twelve browser tabs to start shopping, I have failed you.

That is exactly what I don’t want.

When you book your newborn session with me, wardrobe planning is part of the experience.

I can help choose Mom’s dress from my client closet. We can coordinate Dad and siblings around her. Once you arrive, I already have baby’s wardrobe waiting.

If you own something you absolutely love, wonderful. Bring it and we can build around it.

If you have absolutely no idea what you want to wear, that is okay too.

This is something I do over and over again.

You are not supposed to know how to style a family for photographs.

Just like I wasn’t supposed to know when I was planning my own daughter’s newborn session.

I wish someone had helped me then.

So now, I help you.

What You Wear Matters, But It Isn’t What You’ll Remember Most

Yes, clothing matters.

Beautiful styling creates a cohesive gallery. Colors influence how your photographs feel. The right dress can make you feel much more confident standing in front of a camera shortly after giving birth.

But twenty years from now, I don’t think you are going to pull out these photographs and say, “Thank goodness I chose ivory instead of cream.”

You’re going to notice how tiny your baby looked against Dad’s chest.

You’ll see your toddler leaning into you before he grew another foot and decided cuddling Mom was terribly embarrassing.

Your daughter may look at a photograph of you holding her and see something you cannot see right now.

Her mom.

You may look at that same photograph today and notice the postpartum body that still feels unfamiliar. You might see tired eyes from being awake half the night.

She won’t.

She will see the woman who held her.

And years from now, I think you will see her too.

That’s why I care about helping Mom find something that makes her feel beautiful.

Not because the dress is the most important part of the photograph.

Because you are.

Looking for a Savannah Newborn Photographer?

If you are expecting a baby and looking for a Savannah newborn photographer, my studio newborn sessions are designed to take care of much more than what happens in front of my camera.

From planning the colors and styling your family to providing wardrobe options for Mom, Dad, and baby, I want you to walk into my studio knowing you do not have to have everything figured out.

You have enough to think about when you’re preparing to bring a new baby home.

What you’re going to wear for her newborn photographs does not need to be one of them.

I recommend reserving your newborn session while you are still pregnant so we have time to plan everything before your baby arrives.

You bring me your family.

I’ll help you figure out what everyone is wearing.

And I promise, you do not need to spend the next three months obsessively searching for the perfect dress.

I’ve already done that part for you.
